Gymnasium an der Schweizer Allee
GadSA is short for "Gymnasium an der Schweizer Allee". "Gymnasium" is the German word for Grammar School, not a hall where you do Physical Education. The German word „Allee“
means a long street with trees on both sides.
Our school was founded in 1968 and the main building, which is being renovated now, was built in1973/1974.
At the moment our school is being renovated for 18 months therefore there are "containers" on the sportsfield of our school. Most of the pupils, classes 5 to 9, are taught there while the others have their lessons in the renovated part of the school. These rooms really look better than the old ones. Now we have new music rooms,a new chemistry room and two new multimedia rooms. Only our playground isn´t being renovated.
Due to these circumstances our school cafeteria, called "Rosi", has its own container on the playground.
There is also a bikeshed for our bikes on the playground and two guards take care of them.
The main building consists of two parts: the renovated part of the building and the part which is still being renovated. We want to tell you about the new multimedia rooms, which are well equipped with computers and a dsl-internet connection and they are all password protected so that nobody can do illegal things like sending worms or playing games in the lessons. The new music rooms have carpets on the floor and on every desk is a keyboard. The teachers have their own piano and a Hi-fi system. Other instruments in the music rooms are drums and percussion instruments. The chemistry rooms, not yet finished, are equipped with atom models,
test tubes and various chemicals and other equipment.
The next thing we want to tell you about are the people in our school: Our headmistress, Mrs Levin, has organised the renovation of the school. The deputy headmaster is Mr. Steffen. Our school has about 60 teachers and aproximately 1000 pupils . Our caretaker is Mr Klos, who organises school festivals and parties and takes care that nobody is hurt when he 'controls' the playground. The younger pupils, classes 5 and 6, have their swimming lessons in the indoor swimming pool near the school.
Our school was established in 1968 but the main building was built in 1973/74 and is equipped with outdoor athletic facilities and well-equipped rooms.
Our school also runs exchange programs with other countries such as Norway, Poland, France, Italy and the Netherlands. Pupils spend a week with an exchange partner and their family and experience a different way of life. These trips allow children from different countries to share their culture and it also strengthens the good relationship between the partner schools.
In year 11, pupils must complete a two week work experience program in a placement of their choice. This helps to prepare them for real life and to choose a suitable career.
